As a resident of Kansas, I am deeply disturbed by the lack of legal repercussions for those who abandon animals in our state. Our lawmakers have decided that it is not a crime to abandon or dump animals here. This decision overlooks the fact that domestic animals cannot survive as people might assume they can, especially if they were previously pets. It is nothing less than animal cruelty.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year, many abandoned by their owners. In Kansas alone, thousands of pets are left homeless each year due to abandonment.

The absence of fines or penalties sends a message that this behavior is acceptable when it is not only morally reprehensible but also contributes significantly to the overpopulation and suffering of innocent creatures.

We need our legislators in Kansas to recognize this issue and take action against animal abandonment by imposing fines on those who commit such acts. By doing so, we can discourage this cruel practice and protect countless innocent lives from unnecessary hardship and suffering.
