Impose Federal Ban on Private Fireworks

The Issue

I’ve been in the US for thirty years i, yet the sound of fireworks still sends my heart racing, evoking memories of a past I've tried hard to put behind me. With Independence Day months away, I am asking for everyone’s help. As a refugee from a war-torn country, I've experienced firsthand the terror and trauma of warfare. Fireworks, for many, are a symbol of celebration and joy, but for me and countless others like me, they are unwelcome reminders of conflict and distress. Imagine getting shocked, or rocked out of sleep, not knowing if what you heard were fireworks or shots fired.

Fireworks-related incidents are not only triggering for veterans and refugees but also for pets, wildlife, and those with sensory sensitivities. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause an annual average of 18,500 fires and account for thousands of emergency room visits. The innocent celebration on one side can be a source of unnecessary panic and danger on another.

Beyond the emotional and physical risks, fireworks contribute to significant environmental harm. They release toxins and pollutants, impacting air quality and wildlife habitats. For a country striving towards sustainability, continuing the use of such non-essential, environmentally damaging products is counterproductive.

The solution is clear: a nationwide ban on fireworks - even for purchase in tribal lands. This doesn't mean abandoning celebrations. Alternatives like drone or laser shows honor community traditions without the negative consequences. Cities and countries around the globe have successfully implemented these alternatives, proving it's possible to celebrate safely.

Let's protect our communities, improve public health, and embrace sustainable celebrations. Sign this petition with the Fourth of July coming up to urge lawmakers to make fireworks illegal nationwide, fostering a safer, more inclusive environment for all. There are much safer and healthier ways to celebrate.
