The Issue

I have watched in frustration as Rideshare giants like Uber and Lyft have taken over the streets of Pennsylvania. Their aggressive tactics have not only disrupted the traditional taxi service, which is held to rigorous standards, but they have benefited monetarily without equal scrutiny.

These companies have found numerous ways to maximize their profits at the expense of both drivers and riders. From using AI to potentially fake ride damage reports (wait, did I just say that?) to rushing through traffic recklessly, their operations thrive on cutting corners. This phenomenon not only affects our safety but also significantly diminishes the revenue that could be directed towards public goods.

Let me share a personal story. In February of 2024, I needed a ride home from a retirement party, because I was not willing to walk at that hour. So, I called a Lyft. My driver charged me an obscene amount of money to get from the party venue back to my house, and they drove recklessly exceeding the posted speed limits and running multiple red lights. Unbelievable.

While these rideshare companies enjoy immense financial gain, they evade the kind of taxes and regulations imposed on traditional taxis. This discrepancy allows them to hoard funds that could be utilized for critical community institutions like public transportation, zoos, and animal shelters. Moreover, enhancing these local services by redistributing rideshare profits could improve the quality of life for everyone in Pennsylvania.

By implementing a 15% tax on rideshare companies in Pennsylvania, we can create a fairer marketplace and generate substantial revenue for valuable public services. This tax would not only hold these corporations accountable but also foster more sustainable community development.

We urge the Pennsylvania legislature to take action now. Sign this petition to support taxing rideshare companies and reap benefits for our state's crucial services. Together, we can ensure that the profits made at our communities' expense are redirected to benefit those who deserve it most.
