Yes, Fipronil pesticide can cause mass fish deaths if it enters water bodies in high concentrations. Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide that is commonly used in agriculture, residential settings, and veterinary medicine. When it enters water bodies, it can be highly toxic to aquatic life, including fish.

Fipronil can enter water bodies through various routes, such as agricultural runoff, accidental spills, or leaching from treated soil. Once in the water, it can affect the nervous system of fish and other aquatic organisms, leading to convulsions, paralysis, and death.

Several incidents of mass fish deaths have been reported due to Fipronil contamination in water bodies. For example, in 2017, over 2 million fish died in a river in France after Fipronil was illegally dumped by a company. In 2019, Fipronil contamination was also linked to a large-scale fish kill in Australia’s Darling River.
