Unfortunately, we are back again in a bid to keep the cafes in the hands of local people & we need your support!
The cafes at Parliament Hill, Queens Park, the Lido and Highgate Woods have long been welcoming havens for visitors to the local parks and woods, and for those that live in the immediate vicinity. They are distinctive – they are REAL CAFES – providing a range of nutritious and affordable food and drink and friendly service in relaxing environments. They are run by small, local operators at Parliament Hill, Hoxton Beach at the Lido, Queens Park and Highgate Woods who understand the needs of their customers and the local community – they offer an experience which is a far cry from that offered by corporate café operators, whose overwhelming priority is to maximise their profits.
We want to keep it this way ‘PEOPLE OVER PROFIT’ but the City of London Corporation, which owns the land on which the cafes stand, is seeking to put them out to tender, with the risk that management of the cafes may pass to operators who have little local knowledge or experience and simply operate them as ‘just another part of their chain’.
We need to stop this gentrification and impress on the Corporation that having operators who are rooted in the community and who understand the needs of their customers is an essential pre-requisite for maintaining the uniqueness for which the cafes are renowned.
