The Issue

I have spent a long time researching the impacts of gun violence and its prevention methods. The conclusion is clear: stronger background checks make a significant difference in reducing gun violence. This issue is personal to me, to all of us, as we need to create a safer environment in Bloomington and the state of Indiana for ourselves and our community. However, the requirements put in place for obtaining a gun are insufficient.

According to the Giffords Law Center, in Indiana, unlicensed sellers can sell firearms without conducting any background check on the purchaser, which is concerning. In addition to this, federal law does not require dealers to conduct a background check if a firearm purchaser presents a state permit, which Indiana also exempts. This lack of exhaustive background checks allow individuals prohibited from having firearms, such as those with criminal records, to have easy access. In a study by Everytown for Gun Safety, states that require background checks for all handgun sales observed 46% fewer women shot to death by intimate partners, proving the positive effects of such measures.

Let’s enforce stronger background checks and, in doing so, build a safer community for everyone in Indiana. By doing this, I believe that we can effectively reduce the likelihood of future tragedies. Indiana legislators must understand the urgency and importance of the issue. Join me in urging Indiana lawmakers to revise the current laws and implement stricter, more complete background checks for all gun purchasers. Your voice counts. By signing this petition, we can make Bloomington, Indiana a safer place.
