Implementation of Metal Detectors and Automatic Locking Classroom Doors in FCPS

The Issue

Make Safety the Priority in FCPS

We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens, parents, students, and community members who believe it is time to take stronger measures to protect our children and teachers from potential school shootings and the presence of weapons on school grounds.

In recent years, the threat of violence in schools has become a tragic and terrifying reality in our nation. School shootings and other safety incidents continue to occur across the country, and we cannot wait for something similar to happen in Fairfax County before we take action. We demand immediate, tangible steps to safeguard the students and staff in our school system by implementing the following security measures:

 1. Metal Detectors at All School Entrances: Metal detectors serve as an effective deterrent against bringing weapons onto school property. They provide a vital first layer of defense, ensuring that anyone entering the school cannot bring firearms or other weapons inside.

 2. Automatic Locking Classroom Doors:
In the event of an active shooter or other emergency, time is of the essence. Automatic locking doors provide crucial protection by preventing entry into classrooms, giving students and teachers time to secure themselves and call for help. This simple but life-saving measure should be standard in every classroom across Fairfax County.

Why This Matters:

The safety of our children should be the top priority of any school district. We cannot afford to wait any longer or assume that it won’t happen here. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) must proactively address the growing concerns of parents and the community by investing in these essential security measures. Lives could depend on it.

Call to Action:

We urge the Fairfax County School Board to act swiftly in the interest of our children’s safety by:

• Allocating the necessary budget to install metal detectors at every school entrance.
• Equipping all classrooms with automatic locking doors to protect students and staff in the event of an emergency.

We call on the school board to take immediate action and prioritize these measures, showing the community that FCPS values the safety and well-being of every student and staff member.

We, the undersigned, demand these changes to ensure that Fairfax County Public Schools are safe places for learning, free from the fear of violence.
