The Issue

As a deeply concerned parent, I bring this request to the attention of the higher authorities at the York Region District School - to establish distinct zones for inclement weather. Currently, the entire region is being treated as one, putting both our children and bus drivers at unnecessary risk. This ask stems from the interest of keeping our people safe considering our geographical reality, where weather conditions can significantly vary within the school district.

Ontario's Public School Boards' Association data shows that annually incident rates related to such weather conditions double when compared to days with regular weather conditions (source: OPSBA). The safety of approximately 122,000 students (source: York Region District School Board) and hundreds of staff could severely be impacted if no measures are taken wisely.

We urge the York Region District School Board to review the existing policy and execute a zoned approach for weather-related decisions. This small but significant step could significantly reduce potential risks associated with unforeseen weather events.

We plead with authorities to act swiftly and decisively. Considering our children's safety, we all bear a collective responsibility. Sign this petition and let's ensure the well-being of our children and staff members. Let your voice and support be counted for the safety of our school community.
