The Issue

For too long, the security of our children has been taken lightly. Our children have been in school when the police came to question student(s) about threats of a violent attack. No lockdown was ever put in place and the school glazed over the incident as if nothing had occurred. Both the staff and parents were left uninformed, showing a blatant disregard for the trust we, as parents, place in the institution to protect our children.

The time has come to ensure a safer learning environment that upholds every child's right to security. We call on the school board to implement a zero-tolerance policy for threats of violence against any individual in our school. It is a necessity that parents and staff members are informed immediately of any incidents. We demand concrete safety protocols to protect all children, no matter how frequently they may be required.

In the U.S. alone, nearly 3 million crimes occur in or near schools every year, emphasizing the urgency of this issue (Source: National Center for Education Statistics). We advise a change in policy where anyone threatening violence will face the serious consequence of expulsion, or a mandatory switch to online education.

Our children's lives are not to be gambled with. Ignorance is not the answer to threats; proactive, rigid policies are. Sign this petition to demand a safer learning environment for our kids, demonstrating that threats of violence have no place in our school.
