Implement Wheelchair Parking and Ramp at Kilkenny's New Inclusive Community Park in Gowran

Gowran on the Move as the community group leading the development of our new inclusive Community Hub in Gowran, Co Kilkenny, we've witnessed first-hand the joy inclusive spaces brings to children and families with additional needs. However, there's a significant barrier that prevents these children and families from accessing this space safely and independently - the lack of wheelchair parking spaces and an access ramp.

Our park was designed with inclusivity in mind. It is a place where all children should be able to play freely without any hindrance. Yet, without proper parking facilities for wheelchairs or an accessible ramp, we are inadvertently excluding those who need them most.

In Ireland, approximately 13% of people have some form of disability (Central Statistics Office Ireland). Many among them are wheelchair users who deserve equal access to public spaces like our community park. By adding wheelchair parking and an access ramp, we can ensure that all members of our community feel welcomed and included.

The matter has been raised twice at Kilkenny County Council by Cllr Denis Hynes but he was unable to get any other councillors to support his motion. Kilkenny county council has provided accessible parking and access to another community playground recently and we urge local authorities to take immediate action on this matter in Gowran. This is not just about complying with accessibility standards; it's about creating a truly inclusive environment where everyone has equal opportunities for enjoyment.

Our locally elected councillors are meeting for the Municipal District of Castlecomer on Monday 25th March to finalise spending budgets for north Kilkenny, so please sign this petition if you believe in making our new community park accessible for all children, families and individuals visiting the new Gowran Community Hub. Let us stand together for inclusivity!
