The Issue
West High School in Madison, WI prides itself on fostering academic excellence and preparing students for higher education. However, the absence of a weighted grading system is placing our students at a disadvantage compared to peers in other schools both locally and nationally. A weighted grading system would provide a fair reflection of students' academic abilities, considering the rigor of the courses they choose to undertake.
Currently, all courses at West High School are evaluated equally, regardless of their level of difficulty. This means that students who challenge themselves with Advanced Placement (AP) or Honors courses receive the same GPA points as those in regular classes. This not only demotivates students from enrolling in more challenging courses, but it also impacts college admissions where weighted GPAs are often taken into consideration.
Other high schools in Wisconsin, such as Memorial High School and East High School, have successfully implemented a weighted grading system, allowing their students to shine in the competitive college admissions process. According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, 74% of colleges consider a student's grades in college prep courses as the most significant admissions factor. With a weighted system, colleges would have a clearer picture of the achievements of West High students.
We urge the Madison Metropolitan School District to consider adopting a weighted grading scale for West High School. This change would benefit our students by acknowledging their dedication to challenging coursework, encouraging them to strive for academic excellence, and enhancing their opportunities for higher education.
