The Issue

A personal incident brought this issue to the forefront: A dear friend of mine was recently written up at Komachin for looking up drug names during an English  class. This was not a violation of school policy, but rather rigorous efforts for class preparation. Unfortunately, there was no opportunity to explain the situation or appeal the decision. She was only looking it up for her health class

Schools and institutions play a pivotal role in shaping an individual's life and their fundamental rights should not be deprived in this learning process. To rectify past injustices and improve future practices, we call for implementing a 'verified infractions' system at Komachin. This fair process would require evidence before penalties are issued and allow students an opportunity to argue their case.

According to the American Psychological Association, such procedures that ensure procedural fairness significantly reduce students' psychological distress and increase acceptance of decisions. (American Psychological Association, 2018). This change is a simple step towards due process that will greatly impact student lives and the overall scholastic experience at Komachin. We must create a system that allows for fair treatment of all students.

We urge the Komachin administration and school ASB to adopt this new policy. It’s time to put the power back in the hands of students. Each signature puts us one step closer to establishing this important change. Please, make your voice heard: sign the petition today.
