The current use of lethal force by police officers against dogs is alarming, especially when there are less lethal alternatives available such as stun guns. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 670,000 shelter dogs are euthanized each year in the United States alone. This number could be significantly reduced if a comprehensive assessment was made mandatory before deciding on euthanasia.

Furthermore, it's important that our law enforcement agencies adopt non-lethal methods when dealing with situations involving dogs. A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that non-lethal methods were effective in controlling aggressive behavior in over 90% of cases.
