The Issue

Three devastating accidents have happened at the crosswalk on Chestnut Avenue and Weldon Street in Fresno, CA, just in the last three weeks. The first incident occurred when a student from a nearby school was struck by a truck, resulting in a broken hip and leg. This is a painful example of the dangerous conditions pedestrians face at this intersection. It's personal to me and countless others who rely on this crosswalk daily.

From senior citizens to children, this crosswalk is a lifeline for many who are now living in fear due to these accidents. Adding a traffic light or pedestrian crossing lights at this intersection would significantly improve safety. Nationally, it's been reported that crosswalks with traffic controls reduce pedestrian involved collisions by up to 69% ("Traffic Control and Safety at Crosswalks", Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2017). We must take the necessary actions now to ensure a safer journey for pedestrians and to prevent further accidents. Please join me in calling for the immediate installation of a traffic signal at this intersection. Add your voice, sign the petition now.
