My heart broke today as my beloved cat was run over and left for dead. It's not the first time I've had to experience such an agonizing loss. My previous cat suffered a similar fate around six or seven years ago. The pain of losing a pet this way is indescribable, and it's something no family should have to endure. Yet, here in bradwell/gorleston-on- sea, Great Yarmouth, speeding remains an unchecked menace on residential roads.

While my cats fell victim, the lurking danger is much broader. Children play near these streets, elderly people frequently use them, and families with pets walk daily, all at the mercy of reckless drivers who think they can race through areas where they should be most cautious. This is not just an issue about pets, but a pressing community safety concern.

Studies show that speed bumps can significantly reduce speeding and related accidents. According to the UK Department for Transport, appropriately placed speed humps can reduce traffic speeds by 10-15%. They are a simple yet effective solution that can save lives — of both humans and animals alike.

We urgently need to implement speed bumps and other traffic-calming measures on roads with high pedestrian traffic, especially those frequented by the elderly, children, and animals. This includes my street and similar areas in bradwell/Gorleston-on-Sea where families and their furry friends deserve to feel safe.
