As residents and property owners here, we face daily hazards from high-speed vehicles cutting through our neighborhood. This not only threatens our safety but compromises the peace and comfort we cherish.
Children play outside in front yards or bike down the sidewalk, parents walk their babies in strollers, and families relish evening walks together. These simple pleasures are overshadowed by the ever-present fear of speeding vehicles, driver negligence, and inadequate traffic controls.
Studies show that neighborhoods with effective traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps or raised crosswalks, not only reduce the risk of accidents but also increase the perception of safety among residents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, low-speed zones in residential areas can decrease pedestrian injuries by up to 40%.
We request the City of Elgin Street Division and the Elgin City Council to prioritize and implement immediate solutions like speed humps, stop signs specifically at Speculator ln and quiet range dr, golden eagle way and booted eagle pass and martial eagle dr and golden eagle way increased signage to alert drivers of our residential area. We are also requesting “children at play” and speed limit signs. These measures will effectively slow down traffic and ensure a safer environment for our community members.
