The Issue

During my time working with the police as a doctor, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact prolonged investigations have on officers, many of whom have committed no misconduct whatsoever. The lengthy process, sometimes dragging on for more than a year, imposes unbearable stress and leaves them in a perpetual state of anxiety and depression. Tragically, this pressure has led some promising young officers to take their own lives. This barbaric and preventable tragedy must come to an end.

In the United Kingdom, the mechanism in place to investigate police misconduct is often criticized for its prolonged timelines. Current procedures, which can stretch over many months, exacerbate stress and uncertainty for officers who are under investigation, despite the eventual exoneration being a common outcome. This delay in resolving cases not only hinders the mental wellbeing of officers but also impacts overall morale within the police force, further eroding public trust.

A fair, efficient, and timely investigation process is crucial—not just for maintaining justice, but for safeguarding the mental health of those who serve our community. Evidence suggests that implementing a maximum three-month time limit on investigations where feasible, and providing ongoing mental health support, would significantly reduce stress and the risk of suicide among officers.

Several studies underscore the mental health risks associated with the professions in law enforcement. Police officers are already at a higher risk of experiencing severe stress and mental health challenges due to the nature of their job. According to the Police Federation of England and Wales, the demand on UK police officers is greater than on any other emergency services personnel, placing them under enormous psychological pressure.

Thus, we urgently call on policymakers, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), and related governing bodies in the UK to revise investigation protocols. By enforcing a three-month maximum duration for misconduct investigations, we can act to prevent unnecessary mental strain and protect the welfare of our police officers.

Join us in demanding a vital and humane change that ensures fair treatment for officers under investigation while upholding justice and integrity in policing. Please sign this petition and help save lives.
