Instances have even surfaced where influencers have admitted to being offered millions to support particular political personalities. This sparks a looming question - how much credibility should we assign to these endorsements?

Facts suggest that 68% of Generation Z look up to influencers for guidance and views, making it a largely influential platform (Statista, 2020). The potential for undisclosed political advertising is therefore significant, and has the potential to exploit unsuspecting young voters.

The intention behind this petition is not to curb the freedom of speech or hinder the endorsement process but to fuel it with transparency and honesty. It calls for the drafting of a bill, "The Political Disclosure Act", that would require celebrities and influencers to disclose if they have received any monetary gain or sponsorship from political candidates or parties while endorsing them. It includes clear disclosure rules, penalties up to $500,000 for non-compliance, and enforcement by the FTC. It covers all media platforms. This Act is proposed to bring about accountability and respect for voters' decision-making process in the arena of political endorsements.
