The Issue

As a long-time resident of Prince William County/Manassas, I've keenly observed the way our local authorities handle matters relating to animal welfare. Following an uplifting conversation with the Animal Advocacy Committee (AAC) and the Board of County Commissioners (BOCS) of Prince William County, I realized change is possible, and it lies within our grasp.

This issue is centered around a potential directive (related to all pertinent code, zoning and licensing related to pet stores in Prince William county) change that has been overlooked since August, a change that could significantly limit, if not eradicate, the establishment of puppy shops in our cherished County. According to the ASPCA, puppy mills, which supply these shops, house thousands of dogs in shockingly poor conditions. Puppies are often sold at retail stores or online, often with numerous health problems that can lead to ongoing vet bills for unsuspecting new owners. Implementing this directive would be a significant step in ending this unacceptable cycle of cruelty.

While our county cannot outright ban these stores, it can enforce rules (related to all pertinent code, zoning and licensing related to pet stores in Prince William county) that make their establishment and operation exceedingly difficult. This mistreatment of animals cannot be overlooked, and it is high time Prince William County took effective steps toward protecting the voiceless. We have the power to take a concrete stand against animal cruelty happening in our neighborhoods. It is happening in our community! I saw it first hand when I visited a shop and saw how unwell and sick the living conditions were for the puppies!

I implore the County Commissioners and everyone who shares this concern to push for the enforcement of this neglected directive change. Let's use our collective voices to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Sign this petition, and help us make Prince William County a place where no animal is subjected to mistreatment for profit.
