Implement the 48/96 Work Schedule for Plano Firefighters

Implement the 48/96 Work Schedule for Plano Firefighters
The Issue
Our spouses, the ones who bravely serve as Plano firefighters, return home each day exhausted after long, grueling hours of risking their lives. Each day is an intense endeavor and it leaves them with little opportunity to rejuvenate before they are sent into the fray again. This is not a sustainable way to maintain the peak physical and mental balance needed for such a crucial occupation.
They have been advocating for the introduction of a new work schedule— the 48/96 format. The schedule means firefighters have 48 hours on duty and then 96 hours off duty. This change is not a radical new idea, but a tried and tested method that has been implemented by various fire departments across the nation with reported success. The new schedule provides ample time for recovery and respite, which in turn maximizes the productivity during work hours. This is essential for ensuring the highest levels of public safety, which will benefit the citizens of Plano. The city official’s response notes safety being a main concern, though they’re omitting the 48 hour shifts that are currently being worked with 24 hours off due to mandatory overtime and lack of personnel.
Adopting this format will dramatically enhance their work-life balance, providing more time for them with their families, and hence, contributing to the wellbeing of these heroes. Studies have shown that this schedule can enhance the quality of life, improve mental health, decrease fatigue, and increase job satisfaction among firefighters. They need our support in this endeavor and we stand firmly behind them.
Therefore, we call on the Plano city authorities to heed their call and move ahead with the implementation of the 48/96 work schedule for the dedicated firefighters of Plano. Their service deserves this consideration and they need your support. Sign this petition and lend your voice to this relevant cause.
