As an American citizen, for decades, I have witnessed the recurring abuse of power by the political leaders in our government. Events like the recent ban on TikTok further prove that the reckless decisions of our government officials have begun to undermine the very essence of democracy. The inauguration of President Trump on January 19th marked the start of an era where we can no longer afford to sit idly by as our liberties are being compromised. The start of the new year, however, brings forth an opportunity for change, which we should not let go of.

It is widely known that power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This is why I propose that we work together to demand that term limits be enforced on all government-held positions. Placing tenure restrictions on office holders prevents complacency and ensures that our leaders remain accountable, innovative, and responsive. Career politicians tend to become disconnected from the people they are supposed to represent, but by mandating term limitations, we can enact a future that truly embodies the ‘government of the people, by the people, for the people’.

Research conducted by the University of Missouri shows that term limits increase legislative responsiveness, and encourage competitive elections (Mares & Querubin, 2015).

The time to take action is now. Together we have the power to ensure that the future of America remains in the hands of its people. Implement term limits for all government positions – for the sake of accountability, democracy, and the future of our nation. Sign this petition and let us take back our power!
