Implement Taxes on Daily Rate Payments for House of Lords Members
Implement Taxes on Daily Rate Payments for House of Lords Members
The Issue
As a concerned UK citizen and pensioner, I am deeply troubled by the present tax system. Our elderly citizens, pensioners like myself, are required to pay tax on anything over £12570. This, when compared with the members of the House of Lords who are permitted to claim £55000 tax free, appears inherently unfair. Imposition of taxes forms the backbone of a fair society and, as such, it should be uniformly applied to all its members, regardless of their social status or position.
In addition, the cost of our Parliament is one of the highest in the developed world. For instance, each Lord's daily attendance allowance is up to £323, and in the 2019/2020 period, £23.1 million was collectively claimed. Yet, despite these staggering sums, House of Lords members' daily rate payments are not subject to tax. [source: House of Lords official report, 2020]
We must address this discrepancy. The funds raised by implementing taxes on these daily rate payments could be invested back into the community, supporting public services that are struggling due to underfunding.
I urge you to raise your voice against this gross disparity. Let us advocate for a more equitable tax system and prompt the government to impose taxes on the daily rate payments of House of Lords members. Please, sign this petition and make the UK a place where fairness is truly valued.
