The Issue

I am the founder of Jamaica homes, and I deeply believe in the importance of homeownership for every hard-working Jamaican. This belief is rooted in our national pride, harking back to Jamaican independence and emancipation. Amounting to more than just a roof over one's head, homeownership symbolizes a secure future, stability, and the quintessential Jamaican dream.

However, this dream seems far-fetched for an alarming number of our educators. According to the figures available for 2022, there was an alarming outflow of teachers, with over 1,500 teachers leaving their positions in the first nine months of that year alone. Although the number lessened in the following year, we have still lost around 427 dedicated educators by mid-August of this year, and it continues to be a significant concern.

A primary reason attributing to this mass exodus is the lack of affordability in owning a home, among other financial constraints related to their pay packet. For the crucial role they play in shaping our country's future generation, our teachers deserve better.

Let's join hands and advocate for introducing subsidized housing plans specifically for our teachers. This may not only deter the current trend of mass resignations but also uplift the overall standard of living of our educators, indirectly benefiting our children's education too. Let us work proactively to ensure they can afford their homes in Jamaica, and get closer to realizing their own Jamaican dream. Sign the petition to show your support for our teachers and our children's future.
