The Issue

I have lived in Atlantic Beach, Florida, a place I deeply cherish, for many years. It has always been the lush tree canopy that gives this city its unique charm, providing shade, beauty, and enhancing our quality of life. However, this treasured aspect of our cityscape is rapidly disappearing. Older homes are being torn down at an alarming rate, making way for oversized new constructions squeezed onto small lots. Each loss of an older home seems to take a majestic tree—or several—with it. Moreover, our current preservation codes are too lenient, allowing developers to bypass measures that could otherwise save our invaluable tree canopy.

Trees contribute significantly to our community by improving air quality, reducing temperatures, and offering habitats for wildlife. Their presence decreases stormwater runoff, prevents soil erosion, and substantially raises property values. The loss of trees is a loss for everyone in Atlantic Beach, not just current residents, but future generations who won't experience the peaceful and green environment we grew up enjoying.

Remarkably, studies show that healthy trees can increase property values by up to 20%. They reduce cooling costs by up to 30%, and areas with ample greenery have significantly lower incidences of stress-related health issues among residents. Clearly, trees are not just a part of our aesthetic landscape; they are a critical component of our community's health and wellbeing.

Despite these benefits, the codes intended to protect our trees are insufficient. We need to take immediate and definitive steps to amend these regulations. Our city council has the power to adopt stronger preservation codes that mandate comprehensive reviews and require reinvestment into our tree canopy whenever removal is unavoidable. Other cities have successfully implemented tree preservation laws that include stringent penalties for illegal removals and incentives for residents to maintain and plant more trees.

I urge the city of Atlantic Beach to consider these evidence-based policies and take decisive action. We must strengthen our tree preservation protections for the sake of our environment, economy, and future. Let us not wait until more of our green canopy is lost before realizing the irreversible impact on our community.

Please sign this petition to demand that the Atlantic Beach city council prioritize stronger protections and preservation measures for our trees, ensuring that they will continue to thrive for generations to come.
