Implement Stronger Penalties for Animal Abuse and Neglect

The Issue

I have witnessed unimaginable cruelty towards animals, abuse that shakes me to the core and leaves me wondering - if they can do this to animals, what might they do to us humans? Our society needs to treat this issue seriously. Being cruel to animals is not just morally reprehensible, it is indicative of a deeper societal problem. Those who can harm innocent creatures may also present a danger to humans.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has recognized such links, categorizing animal cruelty as a Class A felony alongside serious crimes like homicide in 2016 (FBI). However, despite this, penalties for animal cruelty are still relatively lenient in many jurisdictions. In some cases, individuals found guilty of severe animal abuse may just receive fines or short-term imprisonment, whilst others simply escape with a warning.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund ranks states on their animal protection laws annually. In 2018, Kentucky was deemed the worst for animal protection laws for the 11th consecutive year. It is clear that legislation is failing our animal friends.

We need to honor the spirit of kindness and empathy that our pets demonstrate to us every day through stricter penalties for animal abusers. Stronger penalties would not only provide a measure of justice for these innocent creatures but also signal that our society has zero tolerance for any form of violence or cruelty. To achieve this, we need your voice. Please sign this petition today to make a difference, for animals, for humanity, and for our future.
