Implement Stricter Smoking Laws for Public Spaces
Implement Stricter Smoking Laws for Public Spaces
The Issue
For me, this issue is deeply personal. It all began when my brother was diagnosed with asthma. The presence of heavy smokers in public parks, streets, and other outdoor spaces has exacerbated his condition dramatically. His struggle for a breath of clean air, the endless nights of pronounced wheezing and coughing echo in my mind, fueling my determination to make a difference. Today, I am launching this petition with the hope that none will have to endure what my brother has.
Tobacco smoke from cigarettes contains more than 7000 chemicals, 70 of which are known carcinogens. It's not just the smoker who is at risk; secondhand smoke kills. According to the American Lung Association, exposure to second-hand smoke causes approximately 7,330 deaths from lung cancer and 33,950 deaths from heart disease each year (American Lung Association). Even brief exposure can be harmful to people with asthma and other lung disorders.
I am advocating for implementing stricter smoking laws in public spaces, making our cities healthier and safer for people, especially children and those with respiratory diseases such as my brother. This is not just about discouraging smoking; it's about preserving the right of everyone to breathe clean, unpolluted air.
Let's join hands in this effort to turn our public spaces smoke-free. Your signature can bring us one step closer to a world where everyone gets to breathe with ease. Please, sign this petition.
