The Issue

On a sunny afternoon earlier this year, my world changed forever. My nephew Ricky, just 31 years old, working as a lawnscaper when he was hit by a car. The driver was distracted  and didn't see him  on the edge of the road. Ricky didn’t survive the collision, and our family is still reeling from the loss of such a vibrant and promising young life.

Ricky's death is not an isolated incident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 2,800 people were killed, and an estimated 400,000 were injured each year in the United States due to distracted driving. These statistics represent not just numbers but shattered families and lives that can never be mended.

Despite these alarming figures, the penalties for distracted driving remain incredibly lenient across many states. Too often, offenders merely face small fine, a punishment that simply don’t reflect the severity of their actions. This needs to change.

I am calling on lawmakers in the United States to implement stricter penalties for distracted driving offenses. We need to ensure that if a distracted driver causes the death of another person, there should be automatic jail time. Such consequences would serve as a strong deterrent against this reckless behavior and could save countless lives.

By enacting tougher laws, we can emphasize the gravity of distracted driving. This means moving beyond fines and including measures such as mandatory education courses and, in cases where injury or death occurs, imposing significant jail sentences. States like Hawaii and Minnesota have already adopted laws that impose more severe penalties, and it’s time for more regions to follow suit.

No one should have to experience the heartache of losing a loved one due to a preventable accident. With your support, we can bring about change and make our roads safer for everyone.

Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to take decisive action against distracted driving. Help turn our collective grief into a powerful force for transformative change.
