The Issue

On March 8, 2024, a devastating tragedy occurred; my sister and brother-in-law, Casey & Richard Johnson, were killed due to extreme negligence. They embarked on their first motorcycle ride of the season, a day that just started as a typical one. However, it took a turn for the worse. They were struck by a distracted and negligent driver (volunteer firefighter) who was exiting his driveway for a non-emergent call, leading to their untimely death. They left behind was a 4 year-old son, forever robbed of the warm embrace of his parents.

The driver is currently facing charges of 2 counts misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield. Despite the severity of his negligence and the irrevocable damage he caused, he will never go to jail or be without his family. This is not justice. It's time for a change.

In 2019, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving claimed 3,142 lives in the US alone, a 10% increase from 2018. Today's laws do not adequately punish such dangerous, negligent behavior that often leaves families shattered and lives lost forever. We demand a comprehensive review of the current laws and plea for stricter penalties for distracted, negligent, and reckless drivers. Our goal is to reduce such tragic incidents and ensure that justice is served.

By signing this petition, you will be part of our fight to prevent other families from experiencing the pain and loss we have endured. Sign today for Casey and Richard. Sign today for all the precious lives that could be spared. Sign today for justice.
