The people behind this petition are animal lovers. We live with the agonizing knowledge of the harrowing pain and suffering experienced by animals at the hands of abusers. These innocent beings, capable of love and affection just like us, are subjected to untold cruelty, while their abusers often face inconsequential penalties. If individuals inflicted similar harm onto other human beings, their punishment would be far more severe. Yet, animals somehow don't get the same justice.

Despite animal cruelty being classified as a Class A Misdemeanor or a felony under certain state laws, the current legal consequences often result in a mere slap on the wrist. With penalties ranging from a short stint in jail to paltry fines, we are failing as a society to protect animals from their tormentors. As per recent reports, more than 1,000 animal abuse cases were reported in the US in 2017, and those are just the ones that came to light. Imagine the countless other cases of abuse that go unnoticed.

It is high time we took a stand against this injustice. It's time we pushed our lawmakers to increase penalties for animal abuse to include mandatory incarceration and psychological assessment and treatment for offenders. This will not only punish abusers appropriately but also deter potential offenders. We must insist on stricter laws for animal abusers to demonstrate that we, as a society, believe in the value of all forms of life.
