Our community is still in shock following the heart-wrenching discovery of a local dog starved to death, merely two months after finding what was thought to be a loving home through adoption from a local shelter. The pain of such horror should never be experienced by anyone, human or animal. However, the sad reality is that our current law enforcement and justice system inadequately penalize such deliberate acts of animal cruelty. This petition aims to change that.

Animal cruelty is, unfortunately, a significant issue in our country. According to the Humane Society of the United States, nearly 1 million animals are abused each year. This cruel trend needs to come to an immediate end. Increasing the severity of punishment for animal abusers will send a clear message that such tragic disregard for life and well-being will not be tolerated.

With stricter penalties in place, we can bring justice to our local friend and the countless other innocent animals suffering silently throughout the nation. We appeal to our legislators to revise the existing law, thereby increasing fines and imprisonment terms for animal abuse offenders.
