Implement Stricter Laws to Enhance Safety for Women.

The Issue

I share this petition with you as a survivor of sexual and domestic violence. My experience is sadly not unique - many women, friends, and acquaintances share similar stories. Some have survived, like myself, while others tragically have not. Women, the ones responsible for continuing our species, carry a majority of our living genetic material. Yet, our population witnesses declining birth rates worldwide, a consequence of socioeconomic strife, exacerbated by violence against women. Such violence is an alarming issue in Canada and needs immediate attention. Data from the Department of Justice (2009) indicate annual cases of female fatalities ranging from 124 to 168, with approximately 62% of these women being killed by their current or former partner. More than half of the women we come across experience some form of sexual violence throughout their lives, resulting in long-lasting traumatic impacts. Devastatingly, it is the sole crime in Canada that is not on a downward trend, costing taxpayers an alarming 4.8 billion dollars. Misogyny promotes this violence pathetically often, further increasing the vulnerability of women. Let us work together to call on authorities to implement stricter laws and protections to safeguard our women. Your signature could mean a world of safety to a woman living in fear. Please sign this petition.
