I'm an animal lover, with a special affection for dogs. When I learnt that over 300,000 dogs are euthanized annually in the US, I couldn't sit back in silence any longer. Canine lives have intrinsic value, not withstanding their significant contribution to our society in various forms - as loyal companions, as therapy animals, as law enforcement partners, to name just a few.

The heartbreaking fact is that many of these animals wouldn't need to be euthanized if there wasn't such a strain on our shelters, largely due to irresponsible breeders and pet owners who abandon their pets or use them for unethical practices.

The problem is not just limited to canine pets; this irresponsible behaviour affects all types of animals, often leading them to languish in overpopulated shelters, where they face an increased risk of euthanasia. Many backyard breeders are unchecked, focusing more on profits than on the health and well-being of the animals they breed.

This is a call to action to our government. We must crack down on irresponsible owners and breeders who add to this burden. Strict penalties must be put in place for people who abandon their pets or breed animals irresponsibly. It's high time we address the crux of the problem and give our shelter system some relief. Dogs lives, and indeed the lives of all animals, matter too.
