Implement Stricter Driving Protocols or Age Limit for Elderly Drivers

The Issue

The harsh reality is that some elderly drivers are becoming a high-risk group on our roads, with a noticeable increased involvement in fatal car incidents. Statistics underscore this tragic scenario: individuals aged 70 and older have a higher crash rate per mile travelled than any group, excluding those aged 25 and under. Furthermore, due to their frailty, elderly people are more likely to die in these crashes.

We have personally witnessed the profound impact of these tragedies. Our community has lost beloved members, families have been shattered, and the pain doesn’t cease. We share these moments not to apportion blame, but to highlight the pressing need for change. There is an urgent requirement to establish stricter driving protocols and to reassess the permissible driving age for safety reasons. Rehashing stories of fatal accidents isn’t our aim; our target is to prevent these heart-breaking scenarios from recurring.

On a national scale, implementing additional driving age restrictions, more regular health screening and compulsory refresher driving courses for the elderly could significantly reduce the risk on our streets. This proposal is not intended to limit independence or mobility, but to safeguard all road users, including our cherished elderly community.

Here are some cases I would like to share, they are truly heartbreaking.

Elderly driver 'so sorry' for crash that killed toddler

‘I drove her to school, she never came back’: Family of teen fatally struck by driver in NE Calgary speaks out

Even if some may say 70 year olds are better drivers and more experienced, they have higher death rates. If you don't want your loved ones to die in these types of crashes, this petition is for you. Just imagine how the people who have experienced it feel.
