Implement strict regulations for Ontario zoos

The Issue

Kiko, a 13-year-old Masai giraffe at the Toronto Zoo, sadly died on January 1, 2026, after an accident in an internal management area. 🦒 Known for their towering height and long, flexible necks, giraffes are particularly sensitive to sudden impacts and confined spaces. Kiko panicked when he was caught in a moving door, resulting in severe injuries that sadly, the zoo staff could not treat in time.

This tragic incident occurred during what should have been a routine care procedure. It highlights a significant issue: Ontario currently has no laws regulating the operations and standards within zoos. This lack of regulation means that animals like Kiko may be placed in situations that are not adequately controlled for their safety.

We urgently call upon the Ontario government to implement rigorous animal care regulations within zoos. This includes specific guidelines for the construction and design of enclosures to prevent accidents, training protocols to safely conduct day-to-day care procedures, and constant supervision to adhere to safety standards.

Animals in captivity are not there by choice; hence, we owe it to them to provide the best possible conditions for their safety and wellness. If proper legislation had been in place, Kiko's tragic accident might have been avoided.

Let's work together to ensure that no more animals suffer due to inadequate care and oversight. Sign this petition to demand the Ontario government enact strict regulations and enforce higher standards in caring for zoo animals. Your signature can help protect the lives of these voiceless creatures and prevent future tragedies.
