Implement Strict Lice Policies and Reduce Transmission Aids in Schools

Implement Strict Lice Policies and Reduce Transmission Aids in Schools
The Issue
The story of our child's suffering ignites the need for this petition. Numerous days spent itching, uncomfortable, and feeling isolated, are not fair experiences for a child, all because of an easily preventable issue - head lice. Our child is just one of the many victims of parents who neglect to treat their kids' lice infestations timely or thoroughly enough.
Every year, an estimated 6-12 million infestations occur in the United States among children 3-11 years old (source: CDC). Schools, more specifically elementary schools and preschools, become immediate breeding grounds for these pests due to the close contact between children.
Therefore, we urgently call for the implementation and enforcement of a policy that ensures children are promptly sent home at the first sign of a head lice infestation. This will provide time for proper treatment and reduce the risk of spread among other students. In addition, to lower the chance of lice transmission via inanimate objects, we demand the removal of carpets, pillows, and stuffed animals from schools. These items have been identified to facilitate the spread of head lice among children.
The discomfort and social isolation associated with lice infestation affect a child's educational and social engagement. It's more than just an inconvenience; it robs children of their focus and their joy. Let's put our children's wellness first. Please sign this petition and join us in demanding safer and less infestation-prone environments in our schools.
