Implement Strict Laws Against Police Brutality in Lockup
Implement Strict Laws Against Police Brutality in Lockup
The Issue
I'm pleading for your attention and support after witnessing a shocking and horrifying incident, which marked a terrible day for our country's conscience. A couple, composed of an army captain and a lawyer, made their way to the police station following a road rage incident and subsequent harassment from roadside goons in Orissa. Rather than receiving help and protection from those sworn to uphold justice, they were met with violence from the very officers tasked to guard them. The couple was brutally beaten, the ordeal repeating in cruel cycles throughout the evening, resulting in severe injuries.
Such activity, which we can only term as police brutality, cannot continue to go unchecked. Police who misuse their authority to inflict harm on the very people they are entrusted to protect must be held accountable. Our nation has seen numerous similar cases over the years, and this incident serves as yet another stark reminder of the urgent need for new legislation.
The pressing need is for laws to be enacted that impose restrictions on police officers from physically abusing any individual in lockup without a court order or remand permission. There needs to be a secure, fair system in place which provides a safe space for individuals, so that one can live without fear in their own country. Only strict regulations, staunch enactment, and rightful enforcement of laws can bring about such a transformation.
Now is the time to rise, to rally, to demand judicial reform that condemns police brutality, and protect our fellow citizens. Let us not wait for another horrifying incident to act - let us act now. Please lend your voice to this cause and sign this petition. Together, we can stand up against police brutality, and compel a necessary reform.
