The Issue

As an individual deeply passionate about our American horses, my heart aches at the sight of their ruthless slaughters. Symbolic figures in many different settings, such as sports and various riding activities, these noble creatures should not wind up in slaughterhouses only to be consumed as food. The SAFE (Safeguard American Food Exports) Act was created to protect American horses from being killed and transported across our borders to Mexico and Canada for human consumption. Despite bearing the kinship and trust of humans, these majestic creatures have shockingly been let down.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), over 100,000 American horses are shipped to Canada and Mexico each year for slaughter, a practice not only heart-wrenching but also hazardous considering these horses are not raised for food and are given a range of drugs unsafe for human consumption throughout their lives.

Just as they have served and enriched our lives, it is our responsibility as American citizens to safeguard the welfare of our horses. The essential clause of the SAFE Act stipulates that horses cannot be transported across borders for the purpose of slaughter. Implementing and strictly enforcing this Act can ensure these splendid animals are safe from horrific deaths.

The beauty and grandeur of the American horse, symbolizing freedom and spirit, must be preserved. We need to raise our voices for those who can't speak for themselves. Let us unite to strengthen the enforcement of the SAFE Act, and thus protect our beloved American horses from gruesome and unnecessary slaughter.
