Every day, as I travel on national motorways for my commute, I encounter a frustrating issue - middle lane hoggers. This unnecessary traffic caused due to poor lane discipline is not just inconvenient but also a safety hazard.

Middle lane hogging, when a vehicle remains in the middle lane even when the inside lane is free, is not just a frustrating sight for daily commuters like myself but also causes congestion, disturbing the flow of traffic. According to a report by the RAC Foundation, lane hogging causes tension and unnecessary lane changes, leading to accidents on roads (RAC Foundation, "Keeping order: Motorway lane discipline").

The Highway Code Rule 264 explicitly states that motorists should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. Failing to do so is, in fact, an offence and can lead to a charge of careless driving. Yet, insufficient enforcement means that this continues to be a significant problem on our motorways.

Therefore, we are asking the police to strictly enforce motorway regulations against middle lane hogging, ensuring motorways are safe and free flowing. It is important that all drivers adhere to the rules and understand the impact of their driving behaviour on others. Our safety and the fluidity of our commutes depend on this.
