On Millikin University's campus, two students have been struck by vehicles in a marked crosswalk within the last year. This tragedy is not an isolated event. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 65,000 pedestrians are injured in traffic accidents in the United States each year. Without improved safety measures on college campuses, students continue to be at risk. 

Increased visibility for crosswalks is crucial in preventing further pedestrian injuries. It is imperative that full-stop rules for drivers at a distance of 50 feet or more when pedestrians are present should be instated and enforced. This should include pedestrians in the act of crossing and those waiting to cross safely. 

To prevent future accidents and protect our students, we propose the implementation of stricter crosswalk safety measures on all campuses across the country, including increased visibility and driver adherence to a complete stop rule.
