I am writing to share an important update regarding my ongoing advocacy for the rights of passengers, particularly those with disabilities, in light of the recent $50 million fine imposed on American Airlines.
This significant development represents a crucial victory for all individuals who have faced discrimination and unjust treatment while traveling.
As many of you know, my family experienced a distressing incident on American Airlines flight 2928 from MTY Airport in Mexico to New York's JFK on August 24th of last year.
The treatment we received from the flight crew was not only unacceptable but also highlighted the urgent need for systemic change within the airline industry. I firmly believe that no passenger should ever be removed from a flight without a valid reason, and I am committed to ensuring that airlines are held accountable for their actions. They cannot get away with mistreating passengers with disabilities as if they had no rights!
The flight attendant—Nancy— involved in our situation, whom I believe should have faced serious consequences for her behavior, exemplifies the need for stricter regulations and oversight.
It is imperative that all crew members are held accountable for their actions, especially when they impact the well-being of vulnerable passengers, such as my six-year-old son. His incident was a result of a minor stomach upset, not indicative of any chaotic scenarios often associated with adult passengers. The crew’s response could have been handled with greater compassion and professionalism.
Despite my efforts to communicate with American Airlines, their responses have consistently placed the blame on my family, dismissing our concerns and insisting that their crew acted appropriately. However, I possess evidence that contradicts their claims, including a video taken at the airport and emails confirming our need for assistance. It is disheartening to see that the airline is prioritizing its narrative over the truth of what transpired.
Needless to say, I am determined to continue my advocacy for legislative change that will protect passengers like my son from arbitrary removal from flights. With the help of our sensible Secretary of Transportation—Pete Buttigieg—I believe we have a unique opportunity to push for reforms that will establish clear protocols and safeguards for all travelers.
Passengers deserve to know their rights and to feel secure while flying, without the fear of being at the mercy of a flight attendant’s whims. I will not rest until we see meaningful changes in the airline industry that prioritize the rights and dignity of all passengers. I am reaching out to officials, stakeholders, and anyone willing to listen to amplify our message and drive this important conversation forward. Together, we can work towards a future where incidents like ours are not only addressed but prevented altogether. Special needs families need to feel safe traveling!
Thank you for your support and for standing with us in this crucial fight for justice and accountability. I look forward to keeping you updated on our progress and any developments in our advocacy efforts. Change is possible and necessary! Thanks.
