We speak on behalf of a community shaken by a tragedy. A beloved student of the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) was tragically killed at the crosswalk on Troost and 51st by a driver not paying attention. This incident has highlighted the urgent need for improvements in traffic measures at this intersection. It is pivotal to ensure pedestrian safety, especially considering that this area hosts a university crowd. Research shows that traffic lights can reduce certain types of car accidents by about 25% (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Moreover, pedestrian accidents can be lessened by up to 50% when a dedicated crosswalk signal is present (Federal Highway Administration). Therefore, we urge for the immediate installation of a stoplight at the Troost and 51st Street intersection. It might not bring back the life lost, but it can prevent other families and friends from experiencing this devastating incident.
