Implement Standardized Safety Grading for All UK Infant and Child Car Seats
The Issue
I am a Mother and an Engineer. I have spent countless hours online and in stores, trying to find the safest car seat for my daughter. Like many other parents, I am left bewildered in the maze of car seat safety. I evaluated test specifications and reports and still found few clear options. Instead I found a puddle of inconsistent advice, subjective scoring, and very little clarity around safety standards.
The problem is simple - there is no standardized safety grading system for car seats sold in the UK which allows parents to clearly compare the safety credentials of each seat and understand what testing has been done. Our choices are guided by salespeople who are not always well-informed, or by the ADAC score (which consists of only a few seats selected from the German market, and has subjective components).
Our children are our most precious cargo and their safety should not be compromised by a lack of transparency in safety standards and testing methods. It's clear that we need a simplified, comprehensible grading system that is standard across the market.
Without this, we are leaving many parents unequipped to make informed choices when buying such a vital safety product for their infants and children. To change this, we need a mandatory standardized safety grading system for all car seats sold in the UK. It's time to clear away the confusion and place child safety first.
Most parents would assume any car seat for sale passes the most recent standard (presently R129) but this is not a legal requirement for sale, meaning many people will be buying seats unaware they do not meet the current safety standard (though must meet the previous R44). R129 is by no means an extensive test and far more can be done, but without a graded system there is little incentive for car seat producers to develop safety measures beyond the pass/fail to advertise they are ‘R129 compliant’. Grading would provide an incentive to develop better in order to compete. The difference in car seat quality across the market is significant, with real world consequences to the survivability of our children.
We are therefore urging lawmakers and regulators to address this issue swiftly.
