The Issue

Our educational institutions are places of learning, not places of fear. However, the absence of a standardized protocol for handling gun threats in our schools has led to issues of excessive force by police and heightened fear among students. When threat levels escalate, it is crucial to have a plan that ensures the minimal usage of force and the optimized safety of our students and staff.

False alarms, or even threats perceived to be more severe than they actually are can cause panic among students and overreaction from law enforcement. A recent investigation by Everytown for Gun Safety uncovered that there had been at least 99 instances of gunfire on school grounds in America in 2019 alone. With such alarming statistics, it is clear that having a robust, fair, and clear procedure is not just a matter of school policy, but of public safety.

We need a protocol that prevents unnecessary trauma while apprehending potential threats swiftly and effectively. We are asking for your help in instigating this change - a change that will not only bring peace of mind to our students but also create a safer, more effective response system when danger presents itself. Please sign the petition and join us in promoting a safer learning environment.
