As a passionate wildlife rescue volunteer, I cannot stand by and watch the significant threat posed to our local wildlife by reckless drivers using Godfrey Drive, Ilkeston as a racetrack. Waterfowl — including swans, ducks, and geese — find sanctuary in our lake along this road, but are becoming victims to speeding vehicles. Moreover, with three schools located on this same road, the danger extends beyond our wildlife, threatening our children too.

The residents of Godfrey Drive are deeply concerned and angered by these avoidable incidents. Our street tranquil setting is disrupted by these carefree speedsters, endangering both human lives and wildlife. According to a report done by the World Wildlife Fund, accidents involving wildlife, such as ours, lead to substantial biodiversity loss and contribute to a global decline in wildlife populations.

We propose the implementation of strict speed limits and enhanced wildlife protections on Godfrey Drive, Ilkeston. This includes the introduction of clear signage warning of the presence of waterfowl near the road and the potential dangers of over-speeding around school areas. Regular police patrols should also be dispatched to enforce these regulations.
