Our community in Fourways Gardens Residential Estate has been repeatedly affected by the reckless behaviour of speeding drivers. Our estate's perimeter walls and properties have suffered damage due to these speeding vehicles on Bushwillow Road. More importantly, this irresponsible driving poses a significant risk to our children, cyclists and pedestrians who deserve safe streets.

Speeding is not just a local issue but a national concern. According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), 27.5% of fatal crashes in South Africa were due to speeding in 2019. This statistic is alarming and highlights the urgent need for measures such as speed humps that can effectively slow down vehicles.

Speed humps are proven traffic calming devices that reduce vehicle speed and increase safety for pedestrians. A study by the U.S Department of Transportation found that speed humps reduce collisions by around 40%. By implementing these on our streets, we can protect our community members from potential harm caused by fast-moving vehicles.

As our roads are owned by JRA, they require a petition to gauge community support before giving us permission to install additional speed humps at high-risk points, including Bushwillow Road.  It's time we prioritize safety over convenience and ensure a secure environment for all residents of Fourways, Sandton.
