Implement Speed Bumps on Fairdale Drive for Safer School Commutes

Implement Speed Bumps on Fairdale Drive for Safer School Commutes
The Issue
As members of the Fairland ES Parent Teacher Association (PTA), we witness and hear from parents and school staff about the unnecessary dangers that the Fairland Elementary School community members endure due to high-speed vehicles on Fairdale Drive. Our deep concern stems from repeated instances of cars speeding recklessly in front of Fairland Elementary School, as well as speeding out of the neighborhood in attempts to make the light at Briggs Chaney, which are hazards for both pedestrians and drivers. This issue is not hypothetical - a recent accident on Fairdale Drive involved a school bus and a car (pictured), a stark example of the risks faced by our students, staff, parents, and neighbors who use this stretch of road on a daily basis.
Speed-related accidents (and close calls) also place significant financial burdens on healthcare and vehicle repairs, as well as causing potential academic disruptions for students. It is an unnecessary issue that could be easily mitigated by the simple implementation of speed bumps. Estimates from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show that speed humps can reduce vehicle speeds by 22-25% and decrease the risk of accidents by roughly 40%.
We, the Fairland ES PTA, are relentlessly committed to the welfare of our students, staff, and families. Our plea is simple: We call upon the MCDoT to install speed bumps along Fairdale Drive to ensure a safe and slow environment around our school. This is not just about traffic control. This is about the lives of our children and the overall safety of our community. Help us protect Fairland Elementary School staff, students/families, and neighbors. Please sign and share this petition now and join us in creating a safer commute for everyone. Thank you!
