As a resident of Slades Corners, I have witnessed firsthand the potential danger that our children face each day due to the lack of speed regulation in our area. We have more than ten children living on our street ranging from ages 1 through 14. The image of their playful innocence is marred with the constant fear for their safety as cars zoom by, paying no heed to the posted speed limits. 

It’s horrifying to think about the amount of distance a car travels while trying to stop at various speeds. A vehicle traveling 40 MPH will still be going 36 MPH when it hits a child who suddenly appears in the street 100 feet ahead of it. The average driver going 25 MPH would be able to come to a full stop within 100 feet! (citation: Radar) Our neighbor posted speed limit is 35mph!

And it's not just the children. As an animal lover, it breaks my heart to recall that I’ve had an animal hit on this road, and later pass away. Such incidents could easily be avoided if adequate speed regulations were implemented.

A study published in the Journal of Transport & Health reveals that the implementation of speed bumps reduces the occurrence of accidents (Barnes, 2015). Thus, installing speed bumps in Slades Corners will not only keep children and pets safe but also contribute towards a more peaceful and secure neighborhood. We cannot, should not, stand by and wait for a tragic incident to catalyze action.
