Implement Speed Bumps in Neighborhood Areas to Promote Children's Safety

The Issue

As a deeply concerned parent living on Cindyann Drive within East Greenwich, RI, I am distressed by the recklessness I witness daily around my neighborhood.  I often witness drivers speeding around our neighborhood, not stopping at stop signs, and not giving a wide enough girth around pedestrians.  On a personal note, many drivers have not only failed to stop at my son’s Special Needs bus stop, but they have sped past. The careless speed of drivers and frequent dismissal of a stopped bus, a stop sign, or traveling too fast not only recklessly endangers the safety of our children but also breaks the law. Just this week, a child was nearly hit by a speeding vehicle. A terrifying close call that demonstrates the urgency of our situation.

Countless children in our community routinely ride their bikes in our neighborhood. Their safety, along with the safety of all other children, should be our utmost priority. Adding speed bumps in crucial areas of our neighborhood would serve as a practical solution to the problem of speeding vehicles, providing a safer environment for our children.

Across the United States, it is proven that speed humps and traffic calming measures can reduce vehicle speeds by as much as 9 miles per hour, and in some instances decrease the number of cars by nearly 40% according to the Project for Public Spaces. We believe the implementation of these precautions in our neighborhood would dramatically increase the safety of our children and overall community.

My plea for action is not just personal, but universal. The safety of our children should never be compromised. Therefore, we call for the necessary actions to be taken to implement speed bumps in our neighborhood. This is a critical measure that will help protect the children of our community. Please, sign this petition and help us make a life-saving difference.
