Implement Speed Bumps in Fort Sheridan Military Housing for Children's Safety

The Issue

Like so many other families in the Fort Sheridan military housing community, we have children who enjoy spending their time playing in parks spread across the community. However, this shouldn’t lead to a tradeoff with their safety due to speeding vehicles and bikers who consistently disobey the traffic rules. The area's calm facade hides a dangerous speeding issue that puts our children at risk each day. Speed bumps would be a simple and effective solution to this ongoing problem.

Surprisingly, despite the presence of numerous posted traffic signs, many bicyclists continue to overlook them, intensifying the risk for our children. As per data revealed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speed is involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. Likewise, speeding significantly reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves on the road. If we implement speed bumps, these speeding fatalities can be reduced by 20% as shown by the Transport Research Laboratory.

Functioning as a tool to decrease speed, these bumps would compel the drivers and the bicyclists to slow down, thereby ensuring a safer playing environment for our kids.

The safety of our children should always be our top priority. For this reason, we implore our local government to take immediate action and implement speed bumps in order to protect our children and our community from speeding vehicles and bicyclists. Please sign this petition and help us take steps towards a safer community for our children.
