My elderly mother has experienced three water outages in our area, resulting in damage to her water pump and even an infection from a breakage. It breaks my heart to see her suffer these consequences, which could have been prevented with timely information. Not only has this affected her financially, but this has affected her quality of life. Having no water for weeks at a time, having to shower at friends homes, run to the laundry mat, etc. The stress alone has been awful. Their current system is broadcasting it on an am radio station.
This isn't just a personal struggle; many residents within the Southern Madison Water District face similar challenges. Water main breaks and outages are unpredictable and can cause significant damage and inconvenience to households, particularly affecting the most vulnerable populations, such as other elderly and those with health concerns.
Despite these recurring problems, there is currently no alert system in place to notify residents of water main breaks and outages. Without such a system, residents have little to no time to prepare or make necessary adjustments, leading to preventable damages and health risks.
An effective solution would be the implementation of an SMS alert system. This would allow the Southern Madison Water District to promptly inform residents of any issues, giving them the opportunity to take necessary precautionary measures.
